Harassment, discrimination can create hostile workplaces

On Behalf of | May 16, 2018 | Uncategorized

Everyone is different. However, some people’s differences are more obvious than others, and as a result, they can sometimes face mistreatment from individuals who do not understand or simply have malicious intent. Unfortunately, New York workers could face harassment and discrimination on the job for their differences.

Verbal abuse is a common form of harassment. Individuals may have co-workers or even superiors who use racial slurs or other inappropriate language in regard to their religions, disabilities or ages. When it comes to this type of action, it needs to go beyond the occasional comment or off-color joke in order to be considered harassment and discrimination. The severity and frequency have to remain so high that the actions create a hostile work environment.

In addition to verbal harassment, individuals could also face other forms of discrimination. For instance, other workers could attempt to cause equipment utilized by disabled workers to work improperly or even take the equipment entirely. Harassers could also carry out actions to mock their co-workers, such as faking a disability or speaking in an over-exaggerated accent.

Being harassed and facing discrimination is something that many people have to deal with on a daily basis. When it comes to these actions creating a hostile work environment, New York residents may have reason to take legal action to address the behaviors. Understandably, many workers do not fully understand their rights and legal options when it comes to this type of situation, but consulting with experienced attorneys could help concerned individuals gain more information.
