Two police officers at a community college recently claimed that the college discriminated against them. They have therefore decided to file a federal suit against the institution, claiming race, gender and age discrimination. Their complaint was filed on a Tuesday and alleges that the former chief of police at the college behaved in a discriminatory manner for three years. Any employee in New York who has suffered such discrimination has the right to seek justice through the civil court system.
The two police officers claimed that the former police chief created a work environment that was hostile due to his rants and outbursts filled with derogatory comments toward African Americans, women and older employees. The president of the college reportedly failed to address this issue. The two plaintiffs are demanding a trial by jury on their charges.
The college said that the two employees have the right to pursue their claims. However, they disagreed with these claims. Still, they said that employees at the college remain totally protected by the institution’s policy prohibiting retaliation, discrimination and harassment.
Employees in New York can expect their employers to treat them appropriately no matter their race, age or sex. However, sometimes companies allow illegal discrimination to take place, which can negatively impact employees from an emotional standpoint and a career standpoint. In this case, the employees who are mistreated have the right to file discrimination claims. A successfully fought claim may lead to remedies such as a promotion or back pay, depending on the facts surrounding the case.
