A woman who used to work for a refinery of Shell Oil recently claimed that she was discriminated against due to her sex. She has filed a lawsuit against the company. Those in New York who face sexual discrimination or sex-based harassment have the right to take legal action.
The woman claims that she started working for the company back in Jan. 2016. She asserts that both co-workers and supervisors harassed her and discriminated against her due to her gender. In fact, the work setting reportedly featured workers who made negative comments regarding women in general and complained about their presence in the workplace.
The plaintiff claims that she once discovered an offensive sticker that somebody had placed on her desk, telling women to stay home if their vaginas hurt. In addition, she asserts that a supervisor once said that females usually did not remain in his department long. The plaintiff claims that even though she reported such issues to the HR department at Shell Oil, the harassment did not stop.
The woman is alleging not only sex-based discrimination and sexual harassment but also wrongful termination, as she was reportedly fired for unsatisfactory performance just days after receiving a glowing progress report. Employees in New York who are harassed and mistreated on account of their sex have the right to sue in an effort to hold their employers accountable. Remedies in a successful case may include monetary relief and even reinstatement to a job, depending on the facts of the case.
