An African-American man in another state recently claimed that a food service company prevented him from having the same employment opportunities as other workers simply because of his race. As a result, he has filed a lawsuit against the company. Employees in New York who experience race discrimination have the right to explore all of their legal options, including filing discrimination claims.
In the recent out-of-state case, the man suing his employer had joined Aramark back in 2013, where he served as a grill cook. However, the company allegedly racially discriminated against him. When he filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the company then reportedly refused to let him go back to work.
The man therefore filed a lawsuit against the company in June, alleging unlawful conduct on the company’s part. As a result of the alleged discrimination the man faced, the man reportedly suffered major damages and injury, including emotional distress, pain and suffering, and extreme mental anguish. As part of his lawsuit, he is seeking a jury trial, punitive and compensatory damages, reinstatement and interest along with court costs.
Race discrimination in New York and other states violates the 1964 Civil Rights Act’s Title VII. Unfortunately, companies still engage in this type of discrimination. Workers who are subjected to this type of treatment have the right to file a claim in an effort to hold their employers accountable. A successful claim might lead to the reinstatement of a job or monetary relief, depending on the circumstances surrounding the case.
