EEOC files lawsuit for woman after sexual harassment, retaliation

On Behalf of | Jun 24, 2019 | Retaliation

Being mistreated at work can cause a number of professional and personal problems. New York residents may feel uncomfortable going into their places of employment and may even develop anxiety, depression or other serious issues due to the harassing actions they face. Unfortunately, they could even have to contend with retaliation if they report the harassment.

It was recently reported that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed a lawsuit on behalf of one woman in another state. The woman claimed that she worked in a hostile environment and was subjected to sexual harassment from another employee. The harassment reportedly involved unwelcome physical contact, sexual comments and other inappropriate behaviors. As a result, she filed a complaint with her direct supervisor and manager.

After complaining about the unwelcome behaviors, the woman was later fired from her position with the company. She believes that the termination was an act of retaliation for her complaints. The EEOC is looking to obtain an injunction to prevent sexual harassment and retaliation in the future and to obtain back pay and other damages for the woman. No comment from the company was provided in the report.

Sexual harassment and retaliation are both unwarranted actions in the workplace. If New York employees believe that they have been treated illegally while on the job, they may want to gain information on their possible options for addressing their ordeals. Certainly, it can be an anxiety-inducing idea to consider legal action, but it may be the step needed to ensure that unjust actions come to an end.
